Nearly 3 million Poles died at the hands of the Germans during World War II (approximately 2,770,000 people. These estimates do not include the victims of Soviet crimes in the territories incorporated into the USSR after 1939, and they do not include the victims of the UPA crimes in Volhynia), in fact the same number of Polish Jews (Jews, but Polish citizens - do not forget that they were also Polish citizens). There are forces that are trying to erase the Germans from the history of the Holocaust (or to completely cover the fact that Poles were exterminated during the war). These forces intend to completely remove the fact that Poles also died then. The starting point for this conversation should be the fact that Polish territory has been invaded. In Poland, the crimes were committed only through a small part of the society, which carried out the murders at their own risk, often against state structures (underground or emigration). The conquered society of the General Government (Poland did not exist then, we were conquered by Hitler's Third Reich, and from the east by the USSR). Anti-Semitic indoctrination, cunning German propaganda prepared for the weakest and vulnerable Polish citizens (illiterate or declared anti-Semites) was the direct cause of radicalization, the emergence of sociopaths or psychopaths (after all, the Germans not only stirred up moods, but also rewarded collaborators or simply bandits). The increase in murderous moods was only a consequence of the policy implemented by the then Germany in the territory of conquered Poland, where no official Polish state structures functioned, because simply under occupation, under German terror, they could not exist. The Polish state has never committed systemic killing, no genocide or extermination. Indeed, the mood of pre-war society was strongly saturated with anti-Semitism, but firstly, it was not murderous anti-Semitism, but the result of a certain social conflict (of economic and religious grounds). However, single murders and acts of reluctance did happen. I understand (from the perspective of cold calculation) Germany's attempts to share responsibility (but I do not understand the falsification of history by Jews, they completely removed the Germans from this story - the Nuremberg laws, the German occupation of Poland, etc.), but the facts are that the Holocaust was only a German project, planned and managed by them (and in addition to the millions of Jews killed, they killed millions of Poles, which cannot be forgotten). The Holocaust happened only when Polish state structures ceased to exist - they were dismantled and our officials were replaced by indoctrinated German anti-Semites - murderers at various levels of administration. They gave permission, the order to kill. There were collaborators, blackmailers and murderers in Poland, but they were on the margins of society. We cannot draw a dark picture of the Polish society of that time just because a small part of this community are degenerates. Or conformists seeking agreement with Germany. There were relatively few collaborators (although the number of denunciations was supposedly enormous, the directors of local postal departments often intercepted and destroyed letters - denunciations addressed to the Gestapo - hence the information on this subject). There were indeed collaborative structures: e.g. the blue police, but it was Polish in name only (it was not an emanation of the will of the Polish state, and the name only reflected the citizenship of its members, it was a structure created by Germany in the occupied territory with all its consequences), supervised and controlled by the Germans. I will sum it up this way: only Germany is to blame for the Second World War, and likewise for the extermination of Jews. It cannot be said that Poles participated in the extermination of their own free will, because Poland did not exist as a free state at that time - it was not Poles who ordered the extermination. There was a collaborative element that was in no way controlled by Poland, even managed, sometimes forced into obedience by the Germans by terror (and sometimes not really - I do not intend to defend the degenerates). In addition, the Polish Underground State often pursued blackmailers, murderers - both independent exterminators and murderers in the ranks of the PPGG (Polish Police of the General Gouvernement, or "granatowa policja"). A few days ago, the New Yorker published an article on this topic (ie concerning the Holocaust and Poles), in which it was stated that Poles were responsible for the Holocaust. This article reminds me of the action from the 1950s, when the German intelligence - BND, probably "Agency 114", came up with an idea how to reduce the odium burdening the Germans for the war and the Holocaust. It was suggested to use the term "Polish camps" in the media - deliberately falsifying history and brainwashing.
And the behavior of Grabowski, a historian who confirmed the theses contained in the TNY article with commitment and ecstasy. A historian who is surely aware that the article published in The New Yorker falsifies the history of Poland, Jews, the Holocaust, and World War II, will allow many people to look at this man differently... (As a confirmation of my words about falsifying history, it is worth adding that The New Yorker reacted - the content and theses of the article were changed. This happened after the reactions of the Auschwitz Memorial / Muzeum Auschwitz

This situation is not entirely clear, you should remember that there are people who are trying to erase the losses, suffering and destruction of Poland and Poles from the history of WWII. And these are not fantasies or a product of a sick mind. This is how recent events and recent publications on the Holocaust are perceived in Poland - not only on the conservative side, but more and more often on the left side as well. Poland does not have much strength in the international arena and this fact is deliberately used with specific intentions.
